Gift cards, store credit and discounts

Let customers check their own gift card balance

A balance checker on your storefront, in checkout and on the customer account page, plus an admin that issues, imports, syncs and reconciles every card you have ever given out.

5.0 from 5 reviews on the Shopify App Store

  • A theme block, not a theme edit
  • Finds the cards Shopify already issued
  • Every check logged and searchable

Add it from the theme editor. Nothing is written into your theme's code, and removing the block removes the checker.

The problem

Every gift card question ends up on your desk

A gift card is the one thing a customer holds that they cannot look up themselves. So they ask you, and you go and read it out of the admin.

“How much is left on my card?” arriving by email

A balance checker on your storefront that answers it in a second

Opening the Shopify admin to read one card back to a customer

Every card searchable in one place, with its balance and history

A customer at checkout unsure whether their card covers the order

The balance shown in checkout, and the card applied from there

Issued value quietly expiring without ever being spent

Reminder campaigns that email the holder before it lapses

No idea how much outstanding gift card value you actually owe

A liability page that totals what is still sitting unspent

Features

What it does

One app across the three places a customer looks and the one place you work.

Storefront balance checker

A theme app extension block you drop on any page. Several layouts to choose from, styled to match your store. The customer types their code and sees what is left.

Business plan

Balance at checkout

A checkout extension shows the balance and lets the customer apply the card without leaving checkout.

In the customer account

A block on the profile page showing everything one customer holds: gift cards, and store credit or assigned discount codes once those modules are on.

An admin for every card

Search and open any card, create cards in bulk as a tracked job, import a CSV of cards you already issued, export the list, and run a sync to pull in what Shopify already holds.

Analytics and an audit log

A usage dashboard, plus a history of every check and change tagged as admin, storefront or checkout, so you can see where the lookups are coming from.

Liability and reminders

See the outstanding value you owe rather than the revenue you booked, and run expiry or dormant-balance campaigns with a frequency cap so nobody gets emailed twice.

In detail

What you set up in Settings

Each settings page, and what it controls.

Setup Guide

Sync the gift cards Shopify already issued and add the balance checker block to your store, in order.

Modules

Gift cards are always on. Turn store credit or discounts on when you need them. The app asks for the extra Shopify permission only at that point.

Notifications

Expiry reminders a set number of days before a card expires, and low balance reminders at a threshold you choose. Advanced and Business.

Emails

Logo, brand color, header style, sender name, reply-to and footer for every automated email, with a test send. Advanced and Business.

Extensions

One list of the storefront block, the checkout block, the customer account block, the admin customer block and the Flow actions, with a link to where each one is added.

Usage alerts

Emails when you approach, near and reach your monthly balance check allowance, so the checker does not stop without warning.

How it works

Three steps, and the questions stop

Add the block

Open the theme editor, drop the balance checker where customers will look for it, and pick a layout. No code, no theme file changes.

Your existing cards appear

The app syncs the gift cards your store has already issued, so the admin is populated on day one rather than starting empty.

Customers look it up themselves

They enter their code and get the balance. Every lookup is recorded, so you can see the volume you are no longer answering by hand.

Optional modules

Gift cards first, then the rest of what you give away

Store credit and discounts are separate modules. Both are off until you switch them on, and neither changes anything if you never do.

Store credit

Every customer's balance in one list, split by currency. See what is about to expire and who has stopped spending. Issue credit to one customer, a pasted list, or a whole segment, and it counts towards your liability total.

Discount codes

Every discount and its codes, with how many were never redeemed. Create codes in bulk or import a list, see what each discount actually gave away measured from real orders, and remove unused codes without touching redeemed ones.

Switched on when you want them

Turning a module on asks Shopify for the extra permissions it needs at that moment. There is no reinstall and nothing to re-approve if you only ever want gift cards.

Wired into Shopify Flow

Three Flow actions (issue a gift card, issue store credit, assign a discount code) so a birthday, a first order or a resolved complaint can hand out value without you doing it by hand.

FAQ

Questions merchants ask

How does a customer check their balance?

You add the balance checker block to a page from the theme editor: a dedicated gift card page is the usual spot. The customer enters their gift card code and sees the remaining balance straight away. Nothing is written into your theme's code, so removing the block removes the checker.

Does it work with gift cards I issued before installing?

Yes. The app syncs the gift cards already on your Shopify store, so they are searchable in the admin and checkable from the storefront from day one. One caveat that comes from Shopify rather than from us: Shopify only ever returns the last four digits of a card after it is created, so the full code is stored only for cards this app creates or that you import.

Can customers check the balance during checkout?

Yes, on the Business plan. A checkout extension shows the balance and lets them apply the card without leaving checkout. The storefront checker and the customer account block are on every plan.

How many balance checks do I get?

Basic covers 100 a month and Advanced 500; Business is unlimited. Checks are counted the same whether they come from your storefront, from checkout, or from a lookup you run in the admin.

Is there a free plan?

No. Basic is $4.99 a month, Advanced is $9 and Business is $19. Advanced and Business can be billed annually instead, at $90 and $210.

What are the store credit and discount modules?

Two optional instruments alongside gift cards, each with its own list, bulk issuing, reminders and reporting. Both are off by default. Switching one on requests the extra Shopify permissions it needs at that point, so a merchant who only wants gift cards is never asked to approve anything extra.

Can I see how much gift card value is outstanding?

Yes. The liability page totals the balance still sitting on issued cards (money you owe rather than revenue you have earned) and includes store credit once that module is on.

What happens when I reach my monthly check allowance?

You get usage alert emails as you approach and near the limit. When the limit is reached, balance checks stop until the next calendar month starts or you move to a plan with a higher allowance. Basic allows 100 checks a month, Advanced 500, and Business has no limit.

Which plans include reminder emails?

Advanced and Business. In Settings > Notifications you turn on the expiry reminder and set how many days before expiry it goes out, and turn on the low balance reminder and set the balance that triggers it. Each one has a test send.

Can I change how the emails look?

Yes, on Advanced and Business. Settings > Emails sets the logo, brand color, header style, sender name, reply-to address, an always-CC address and the footer for every email, and lets you edit the copy of each email and send yourself a test.

Can logged-in customers see their cards without typing a code?

Yes. Add the customer accounts block to the profile page from the customer accounts editor. It shows the customer their gift cards, plus store credit and assigned discount codes when those modules are on.

Where are the setup guides?

Step-by-step guides, a settings reference, troubleshooting and the changelog are at docs.xco.agency/docs/gift-card-checker/intro. You can also email support@xco.agency.
